Le gouvernement de la Nation Crie satisfait de l’ordonnance de protection du caribou du ministre Guilbeault
Nemaska, Eeyou Istchee (June 20, 2024)
The Cree Nation Government proudly supports Minister of Environment and Climate Change Steven Guilbeault’s recommendation for an emergency decree to protect the boreal caribou in Quebec.
Minister Guilbeault has proposed an emergency decree to protect the boreal caribou in Quebec, as some herds approach the « threshold of near disappearance. » The Pipmuacan, Val-d’Or, and Charlevoix woodland herds could soon receive federally imposed protection measures.
The protection order is a positive step in addressing the declining population of woodland caribou, a species deeply connected to the cultural and environmental heritage of the Cree Nation and many Indigenous Nations in Quebec. This decision underscores the importance of collaborative conservation efforts and reinforces the need for ongoing partnerships between Indigenous communities and government bodies to safeguard our shared environment.
« We welcome this as an opportunity to work together with Quebec and Canada to determine the best outcome for the careful habitat management of the woodland caribou in Eeyou Istchee, » stated Grand Chief Mandy Gull-Masty. « The meaningful involvement of Indigenous nations is essential in this process, and the Cree Nation is ready to contribute the extensive work we have done on caribou management. »
« I want to echo our support for this process and emphasize its urgency, » added Grand Chief Mandy Gull-Masty. « We have made significant progress in protecting this species in Eeyou Istchee. The Cree Nation Government acknowledges the longstanding concerns of our users and trappers regarding critical caribou habitat. We are pleased to see this issue addressed and have requested a bilateral process with Quebec and will continue work with Canada to protect the caribou herds in Eeyou Istchee. »
The Cree Nation Government has long advocated for the protection of woodland caribou and their habitats, emphasizing the need for a balanced approach that considers both conservation and the cultural significance of the caribou. We hope this announcement will advance steps towards ensuring the survival of the woodland caribou in Eeyou Istchee while upholding the rights and interest of the Cree Nation.
We look forward to continuing our work with the federal government to implement effective conservation strategies and to promote the health of our natural landscapes. The Cree Nation Government remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting the biodiversity of Eeyou Istchee and ensuring a sustainable future for all.
