Effective Monday, August, 2025, Paul John Murdoch was elected by majority as the Grand Chief/Chairperson of the Cree Nation.

Grand Chief Paul John Murdoch was born in Paint Hills (Wemindji) in 1971 to John and Gerti Murdoch (Diamond). His early life in Wemindji shaped his deep connection to Eeyou Istchee and the Cree people, a connection he carries with pride to this day.
“We all have scars on the outside and or the inside, but they should never prevent us from being authentic and we should always reward authenticity with warmth and empathy.”
Grand Chief Murdoch’s grandfather, Malcom Diamond—known for his prophetic dreams—taught him profound lessons about the balance between pride and humility. These teachings have guided his leadership philosophy throughout his career. Born with a physical difference in his hand, he learned early that authenticity and courage define a person far more than any challenge they face.
With deep roots in Wemindji, Grand Chief Murdoch is known affectionately as “Wemindji Eeyou” by elders who recognize his unwavering commitment to his community and nation.
