Public Statement on the Resignation of François Legault
NEMASKA, EEYOU ISTCHEE (January 15, 2026)
On behalf of the Grand Council of the Crees (Eeyou Istchee) and the Cree Nation Government, we wish to recognize the years of service of Mr. François Legault as Premier of Québec.
During his tenure we were able to collectively mark the 50th anniversary of the signing of the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement—a foundational moment in the relationship between the Crees and Quebec. Mr. Legault recognized that the partnership established in 1975 was built upon collaboration and mutual respect. These principles have guided us in achieving historic milestones with the Quebec government, and we remain committed to continuing this important work through openness and dialogue.
We sincerely wish Mr. Legault and his wife, Mme Isabelle Brais, well in their next chapter and thank them for visiting Eeyou Istchee on a number of occasions. The Cree Nation Government will remain ready to continue collaboration with his successor and advance our shared priorities.
Paul John Murdoch, Grand Chief/Chairperson
