Cree Nation Government announces additional investments for protection and promotion of Cree language and culture
APRIL 12, 2022, Chisasibi, Eeyou Istchee
In a series of announcements that will begin with the Cree Women of Eeyou Istchee Association (CWEIA) and Nishiiyuu Council of Elders (NCOE) and as part of the concerted effort to enhance the Cree Nation Government’s efforts to protect Cree language and to ensure cultural preservation, additional investments will be provided to regional associations tasked with the implementation of strategies and programs to fulfil these initiatives.
Additional funding of $200,000 for the Cree Women of Eeyou Istchee Association and $650,000 for the Nishiiyuu Council of Elders will allow these associations to evaluate and assess current programming, evaluate the efficiency of organizational structures, as well as develop and promote new programming that will be in line with the revitalization and promotion of our culture and language.
“I am extremely pleased about today’s announcement. New and increased investments, specifically intended to assist in the protection of Cree language and the preservation of our traditions and customs that make Eeyouch unique and distinct, is critical. I am enthusiastic about the future of our nation and trust that our regional associations hold the same beliefs at heart and will make every effort to collaborate in reinforcing and safeguarding our culture and language.” – Grand Chief Mandy Gull-Masty
In similar announcements that will be forthcoming, the Cree Trapper’s Association and Cree Nation Youth Council will also be mandated with assessing and developing enhanced programming with the common objective of protecting and promoting the richness of our language and culture that has maintained our links with one another across Eeyou Istchee for generations.
