The Grand Council of the Crees (Eeyou Istchee)/Cree Nation Government, in collaboration with the Cree Trappers’ Association, is pleased to announce that a meeting to exchange on the impacts of mining and exploration with the inland communities will be held on September 16, 2024, in Mistissini.
This session will be an important opportunity for those involved in mining and exploration activities, as well as for impacted land users and tallymen, to address concerns regarding the ongoing and proposed projects in Eeyou Istchee.
Topics of discussion will also include legal obligations and rights in addition to providing an open platform for discussions on the process and to gain feedback.
Key Objectives of this Meeting
Key Objectives of the Meeting:
- Provide tallymen with information on the proper legal obligations of their role outlined in the James Bay and Northern Québec Agreement (JBNQA)
Cree Nation Government Mining Policy: proper process of mining activities in Eeyou Istchee
Review of PDA and IBA procedures with impacted families
Roles of impacted families, local government, and Cree Nation Government
Involving land users in the project development process
Workshop to identify and address concerns of tallymen regarding mining or exploration activities
Review and exchange on proposed social acceptability report card
Please note that this meeting is open to local land users and tallymen from inland communities. A date and location of the second meeting to be organized for coastal communities will be announced shortly along with information on how to register. The participation of all stakeholders is vital to ensuring that the development in our region is carried out responsibly and with respect for the land and its people.
