Official Laws Passed by the Cree Nation Government

In 2017 the Cree Governance Agreement was signed giving Cree Nation Government that ability to adopt and enforce its own laws within Eeyou Istchee. We have officially adopted 1 law effective September 17, 2019.

Bill 1: An Act respecting the Cree language of Eeyou Istchee

The Cree Language Act was adopted unanimously by the Board Council of Cree Nation Government on September 17, 2019 in Waswanipi. It is the first official bill that has been adopted by Cree Nation Government since the signing of the Cree Governance Agreement. The bill was created and adopted with the intent of preserving our Cree language, which is a cornerstone of our culture and identity as Cree people.

The objectives of the Act are to support and promote the use of the Cree language, to support Cree efforts to reclaim, revitalize, maintain and strengthen the Cree language, and to plan initiatives and activities for restoring and maintaining fluency in the Cree language.
