Stemming from past regional climate change events, the Climate Change Adaptation and Emergency Preparedness Workshop answers regional needs. The workshop aims to develop local and regional climate adaptation plans and enhance environmental emergency management coordination.
To achieve this, the first 2 days will be devoted to going through a step-by-step adaptation planning process. The Cree Nation of Chisasibi will serve as the case study; however, the objective is for each participant to acquire the necessary knowledge to replicate the process in their own community. In other terms, it is structured as a “Training the Trainer” program. Note that this event is twofold; while this first workshop focuses on a coastal case study, the second workshop (to take place later in the year) will tackle the inland perspective.
Having two trainings in the same year will offer participants plenty of time to work on their plans and get real-world feedback.
The third and last day will tackle environmental emergency preparedness through tabletop exercises addressing various potential scenarios, communication and coordination.
Moreover, this event constitutes the first in person meeting of the newly appointed Climate Change Advisory Committee! This body, by bringing together the communities and Cree entities, help foster rich discussions while promoting the sharing of insights and experiences and ensures regional cohesion.
