Community Private Housing Initiative
Supporting the construction of new private homes in the Cree communities of Eeyou Istchee (Category 1A lands)
On May 27, 2020, the Cree Nation Government approved the Community Private Housing Initiative. This new Program Initiative forms part of the Cree Nation Housing Strategy, and is intended to:
- Stimulate the construction of new private homes for the current and future generations of Crees living in the Cree communities of Eeyou Istchee
- Encourage and support Cree access to private homeownership and the development of a robust real estate market in the Cree communities
- Facilitate the participation of Cree Local Governments and their development corporations in this new Cree housing market
The Cree Local Governments will administer this new Program Initiative at the community level. Under the new Program Initiative, a Cree Local Government can either provide private housing subsidies to Cree individuals so they can build their own house in the community, or use private housing subsidies itself to build private housing units for Crees in its community, including through its development corporation.
