Wemindji is located at the mouth of the Maquatua Rivert and is the third northernmost community located on the coast of James Bay. It’s home to approximately to 1,400 Crees. Wemindji is Cree for Paint Hills or Red Ochre Mountain. The Chief of Wemindji is Christina Gilpin.
